Ikea accepts alkaline batteries for recycling, which is a
particularly good idea because it has been established
that when batteries decay in a landfill, they release
chemicals linked to several forms of cancer. Ikea also
accepts florescent light bulbs and paper. The recycling area
is usually in the front of the store, near the service area.
It is illegal to dump motor oil in the trash or to pour it into
a sewer. In most states, auto repair shops and auto
supply stores must accept used motor oil for recycling at
no charge to the public.

The Walt Disney Company for years offered free
autographed photos of its characters upon request to
their fan mail department in Burbank, California. However,
after the Reader's Digest and other publications recently
reported on this free offer, the company has abandoned
this practice. Now, they will send a "character fan card"
upon request, but only if the request is sent by certified
mail to: Guest Communications, Attn: Character Fan Mail,
P.O. Box 3232, Anaheim, CA 92803. It seems a shame to
require the expense and bother of sending a letter by
certified mail, which is clearly intended to detour all but the
most ardent fans, but I assume that the company was
inundated with requests.
